Family Life II - Children

Even as children David and Sue were swept up in Dad’s enthusiasms. Thanks to Dad’s IWA interests, we seemed to go on a surprising amount of canal boat holidays… … but they were memorable and happy times, and quite a Green alternative, before such an idea was in vogue. Not so Green, perhaps, was the Russell family holiday one year in Scotland - this included a 300-mile round car trip in one day, just so Dad could take some photographs of the Caledonian Canal… Another story to mention was that Dad always seemed to have a can of WD40 to hand wherever he went…If something squeaked it got sprayed. All manner of doors got this treatment. This ranged from student rooms through to hotels, right up to – as family legend has it - the door of Canterbury Cathedral! Indeed, Dad always seemed to be fixing and sorting things out – on Sue’s wedding day he ironed the creases from her veil and fixed a broken nail with super glue. And it’s worth mentioning that our respective weddings were some of the few occasions where John wasn’t family photographer and videographer.
