Growing Up III - Cycling

1937 - 1955

Another early interest of John’s was cycling. He embarked on numerous long-distance trips around both England and the Continent, often visiting family and friends, such as Lise and her family. He cycled some amazing distances, his logs show him regularly clocking 80-90 miles per day. Some of his journeys were undertaken alone, most were in the company of friends. John continued cycling for the greater part of his life, almost all on the same bike - excepting the fact that the wheels, handlebar and pretty much everything else got replaced at some point along the way... This bike formed the subject of one of his many books, written later in life – but we’ll come to that!
