John was born in 1937 in Sutton in Surrey. He and his sister survived the war, including narrowly being missed by V1 bombs. Much of his childhood was spent in Wimbledon, where he attended Kings College School. He had a number of hobbies and interests as a young boy – which, with the benefit of hindsight, provide some clear links with his interests in later life…
